Coney Island

Reconnecting the seafront with the city at the site of the famous Parachute Jump, we pulled the language of the boardwalk inwards, the hardwood slats spreading and rising up to enclose the new centre of activity. The Parachute Pavilion brings 24-hour activity to the slightly desolate area around the Jump site.

By day the kiosks, exhibition hall and restaurant are brought to life by the shafts of natural light filtering down into the building.

By night the activity spills-out, it’s bright lights spreading out onto and inhabiting the surrounding surfaces.

Halfway between camouflage and transparency, the whole is landscaped to form a rooftop-viewing platform, the steps themselves creating outdoor performance space on the esplanade.

And at dusk the routes through start to glow by the safety of this embryonic mall.
